Keep top-k positions
×no parametersindex_mask = torch.full((bsz, 1, end_pos), float("-inf"), device=x.device).scatter_(-1, topk_indices, 0)
Keep each query’s 2,048 highest-scoring positions and mask the rest.
- in
- [B batch, 1 queries, 1001 keys]
- out
- [B batch, 1 queries, 1001 keys]
When decoding, the new token has 1,001 cached positions, no more than the 2,048 it may keep, so it keeps them all; no causal mask is added (model.py 481–483, 903).
Explanation
The indexer returns the indices; attention builds this mask from them (model.py 583–585).

Direct evidence
Indexer scores combine per-head query–key products with learned per-head weights, add the causal mask and keep the top-k positions for each query.

When decoding one token, the implementation absorbs the key–value up-projection into queries and outputs and attends over the cached latent directly.

The causal mask is built only when more than one token is processed; a single decoded token gets none.
