Explanation

A source layer compresses the whole sequence so far into one 512-feature vector per 2 tokens (layers 2, 8, 14) or per token (layer 20), and chooses 512 of them for every query. The layers after it borrow both until the next source.

From layer 24 on, every 4th layer chooses again with its own queries, against layer 20’s keys and inside layer 20’s 2,048 candidate blocks; the keys and values stay layer 20’s.

Direct evidence

Tokens are embedded and repeated into four streams; each layer, after an Engram step where it has one, reads and writes the streams; the last reading mix collapses them, then the final norm and the head.

Attention owns a low-rank query, one key–value projection, a learned sink per head, a grouped low-rank output, a ring buffer for the window, and, by the two source lists, a compressor and an indexer; layers that attend to compressed positions use the larger rotary base with YaRN.

compress_ratio > 0 does not mean the layer compresses its own KV: only kv_source_layers do,
